Description

From the director of the wildly popular Bush Mechanics and Black As - a can-do guide for your next outback adventure filled with practical advice, ripper yarns and road-trip tips. Driving around Australia is one of life's biggest adventures, if you're crazy enough to do it. But as anyone who has broken down on the Nullarbor can attest, it's nerve-wracking to head out into the big red. David Batty knows how to get out of hairy situations because he's wound up in a bunch himself. From nearly being washed away by flash floods in the Kimberley to being marooned on an island in the Top End eating stingray, Batty's Bush Bible is chock-full of yarns from David's four decades as a film director in the most remote regions of Australia. He has lived in Alice Springs and Broome longer than he has in the Big Smoke, has traversed the Tanami Track between Alice Springs and Darwin hundreds of times and reckons he's done more laps of Australia than a Qantas plane. This book also contains the wisdom of many of the First Nations people he has worked with throughout his career, including interviews with the original Bush Mechanics and Black As boys. You'll find out how they stuff blown tyres with spinifex, fashion mulga wood into gear sticks and keep cars going long after their used-by date - and learn how to have a whirl yourself. Batty's Bush Bible is your guide to going bush and living to tell the tale. Filled with practical advice, ripper yarns and road-trip tips, it's designed to be picked up, put down, tossed in the glove box or, if you really need it, used for kindling to cook your tailgate dinner. So whether you're a grey nomad, living your best #vanlife or just looking to do a bit of imaginative armchair tourism, this book is your bible for how to stay out of trouble in the outback - and make your own.

Author Biography:

From his earliest memories, David Batty can recall a lifetime of going bush, camping, canoeing, bushwalking and adventuring with his family on the South Coast of NSW. As a young single father, he moved to Alice Springs in 1981, where a whole new world presented itself. He wasted little time in exploring Central Australia and pursuing his passion to create media, especially for and with Aboriginal people. He was asked to establish the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA) TV unit and took on four Aboriginal trainees in the process. He worked towards gaining a satellite broadcast licence and TV station now known as Imparja Television. Over the next 12 years, David established his own production company that travelled extensively throughout the Northern Territory and Northern South Australia, working with Aboriginal people in creating a vast array of films and videos. He created documentaries, health promotions, film clips, children's films, as well as content about human rights, land care and land rights, the list goes on - all predominantly in Aboriginal languages and often with pre-European-contact people. His most notable work at this time was the creation of the hit TV series Bush Mechanics. Moving to Broome in 1993, David expanded his repertoire of TV productions and teamed up with producer Jenny McMahon to write, shoot and direct several one-hour documentaries and TV series. Just as with his time in Central Australia, 12 years in the Kimberley gave David a rare insight into the country and those who live and work there: pearlers, stockmen, rodeo champs, singers, artists, dancers, and keepers of the songlines. With their reputation gaining momentum, David and Jenny established Rebel Films in Melbourne, where they continued making films and TV series for SBS and ABC. Of note was the epic tale of the last known massacre of Aboriginal people in 1928, Coniston (ABC). In 2015, David was approached to make a TV show with four young men in Northeast Arnhem Land. This seven-year journey has seen David create four seasons of Black As. Season 1 and 2 were made for ABC and season 3 and 4 for an array of social media platforms. Season 4 alone has now racked up over 200 million views worldwide. In 2016, ABC featured David in an episode of Australian Story titled "One of the Mob", which detailed his life and living legacy supporting Indigenous filmmaking. Leaving Broome behind, David bought 300 acres of bush on the far South Coast of NSW and lives off grid in his hand-built home. Now in his mid-sixties and with close to 40 years' experience as a storyteller, innovator and purveyor of bush knowhow, David is primed to extend his deep knowledge and understanding of what's out there, how to get there and what to do along the way ... and how to survive while doing it.
