Description

This artful collection of 40 origami projects brings mathematics to life through the geometry of folded paper. You'll explore properties of triangles, parallelograms, and rhombuses by folding them from squares. You'll fold and arrange pentagons to form beautiful multicolored patterns that tile a floor. And you'll construct the classic Tangram shapes, using them to create and solve puzzles. Teachers, parents, origami enthusiasts, and mathematics learners of all ages will find much to enjoy in this delightful fusion of origami and math.

Author Biography:

Marc Kirschenbaum is a leading American origami artist who has been active with the art form since the 1970's. He has developed hundreds of designs, covering a wide range of subjects. These works have appeared in over fifty books that he has either authored or contributed to. Kirschenbaum's pieces have been shown in major origami exhibitions (including the American Museum of Natural History, The Smithsonian, Mingei International Museum, and Hangar-7), small and sheik SoHo shows, and even a private exhibition at the prestigious National Arts Club. He also gives back to the origami community through his volunteer efforts at OrigamiUSA, a premiere international origami organization, in both capacities as a Director and Chair of the Publications Committee. Daniel Scher is a mathematics educator, researcher, software developer, and writer. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from NYU, where he also taught a pre-service geometry course. He was a principal investigator of two NSF-funded grants: the Dynamic Number Project and the Forging Connections Project. He has also worked as a researcher at Education Development Center (EDC) and as a program director at Best Practices in Education. Daniel is a leading expert in the use of The Geometer's Sketchpad and Web Sketchpad, interactive mathematics software, and has co-authored five textbooks and numerous journal articles.
