"A special edition worthy of the name"
5 stars"

What a great entertainment this is! And this edition does it justice, with a full-orbed suite of supplements on the second disc, which fully justify the additional price.

A 70-minute “making of” and a briefer “In the wake of O'Brian” display Peter Weir at his thoughtful best. The effects doc “Cinematic Phasmids” (30 mins) is better than average, and the movie's wonderful sound design is usefully studied in a separate doc. Really nicely done.

Description

Master And Commander: The Far Side of the World (Two Disc)

Based on author Patrick O'Brian's series of Aubrey/Maturin novels, the movie is set during the Napoleonic Wars.

Crowe is Captain Jack Aubrey, renowned as a fighting captain in the British Navy, and Paul Bettany is ship's doctor Stephen Maturin. Their ship, the H.M.S. Surprise, is suddenly attacked by a superior enemy. With the Surprise badly damaged and much of his crew injured, Aubrey is torn between duty and friendship as he pursues a high-stakes chase across two oceans, to intercept and capture his foe.

It's a mission that can make his reputation – or destroy Lucky Jack and his crew.

Critic Reviews:

  • " I can say most assuredly that it has already earned its place among the pantheon of classic war films and indeed the greatest films of all time. " – VyceVictus
  • " There aren't too many films that can combine intelligence and thrills, but Master and Commander succeeds on both counts. " – Micheal Compton
  • " Written by Weir and John Collee, this is a faithful adaptation of the O'Brian novels told with a well-paced, rousing exuberance and uncommon intelligence and humanity, richly detailed in both character and action. " – Debbie Lynn Elias
