"Excellent story and acting."

Had watched many years back, but and forgotten how the story went. Was so pleased to see it available at Mighty Ape and on a very cold wet week, caught up with the story with the 2 DVD's. Not an overly long story, so no concerns over hours and hours of viewing ahead or needing to buy more at a later stage to carry on the series. Tells the full story with good viewing time. Interesting story line with lots of issues for those caught in France under German rule. Highly recommend.

"A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This four-episode series deals with war and wartime from the point of view of the civilians in an enemy-occupied French village at the end of 1940. Unlike most dramas dealing with World War II there is very little battlefield action shown. Instead the story focuses on the quite diverse reactions of the various townsfolk to the German occupation. The intense loathing of the Boche evinced by most of the older citizens, especially those who had fought in World War I is portrayed most convincingly. John Thaw as Monsignor Renard, the village priest, gives a memorable performance in the role. Only criticism I would voice is that there should have been a lot more series to follow this one. Definitely a DVD not to be missed. Well worth five stars!

Description

Complete series of the classic ITV drama starring much loved John Thaw

Twenty years after taking an acrimonious leave of his family and friends in order to join the Roman church, Monsignor Renard (John Thaw) returns to his home village as parish priest. World War Two is well under way, and Nazi occupation is imminent. In addition to reassuring the locals, Renard must also attempt to repair his relationship with estranged brother Yves (Des McAleer), who resents his sibling having escaped the responsibility of running the family business.
