Description

Authors Rick Jemmett and David MacDonald deliver a rigorously argued, academically-sound and clinically relevant model of assessment, classification and management for patients with lumbar spine pathology. Acknowledging the problems and limitations inherent in the traditional pathoanatomical and biopsychosocial models, the authors' Segmental Dysfunction Model provides for a significantly more predictable approach to patient management while retaining a modern physical therapy skill set. Underpinned by the most recent research from a variety of disciplines, the authors have modeled an evidence-based pathomechanical definition of lumbar dysfunction with management solutions grounded in prospective clinical reasoning, therapeutic motor re-education exercises and updated manual therapy applications. The result is a re-conceptualization of low back pain which allows clinicians to appreciate the nature and extent of their patient's dysfunction and provide more consistent and successful patient management.

Author Biography:

Rick Jemmett graduated from the University of Toronto's Department of Physical Therapy in 1994. His clinical and research interests include the anatomical and motor control-related aspects of lumbar and shoulder pathology. He has taught continuing education courses for physiotherapists across Canada and in the United States since 1997. Rick has authored both peer-reviewed research as well as books on the topics of low back pain and 'core' conditioning for competitive athletes. Physiotherapeutic Management of Lumbar Spine Pathology is his third book. David MacDonald graduated from the Dalhousie University School of Physiotherapy in 1994, then pursued a manual therapy education, passing his Canadian Physiotherapy Asssociation orthopaedic manipulation exams in 2002. He has since gone on to graduate studies with Dr. Paul Hodges in Brisbane, Australia. His research has been presented at major scientific conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. David teaches continuing education courses for physiotherapists through the Atlantic Manual Therapy Institute.
