Emerging from the same art/design cauldron that produced fellow Leeds legends Soft Cell, Scritti Politti, The Mekons and Kaiser Chiefs, CUD were the pre-Britpop response to doleful shoegazing bands – fun-loving, lighthearted, romantic and downright catchy. The best thing to come out of Leeds since Countdown!
The band’s affable charm, good wit and penchant for the unexpected ensured they were always welcome guests, recording sessions for John Peel, Mark Radcliffe, Mark Goodier, Gideon Coe, Andrew Collins and Stuart Maconie. All these recordings are collected here for the first time in this 4CD set.
CUD took art pop into the charts in the early nineties and inspired fan devotion with belting funk nuggets such as ‘Rich and Strange’ and ‘Purple Love Balloon’. They are indie rock for the unpretentious pleasure seeker, boasting as they do the rich deep-lunged voice of Carl Puttnam, edgy guitars of Mike Dunphy and tight, funky rhythm section of William Potter on bass and Stephen Goodwin on drums.
