Author Biography:

Lawrence L. Lynch, born Emily Medora Murdock Van Deventer on January 16, 1853, was a talented American writer who defied societal norms of her time. During an era when it was not socially acceptable for women to write mystery and crime novels, Lynch adopted a pen name that belonged to her husband, allowing her to pursue her passion for storytelling. In 1887, she married Dr. Abraham Van Deventer, but she retained her first pen name, Lawrence L. Lynch, as a means to overcome the gender-related challenges faced by female writers in the publishing industry. While Lawrence L. Lynch may have been a pseudonym, it was through this name that Emily Medora Murdock Van Deventer made her mark in the literary world. Her commitment to her craft and her ability to navigate societal expectations allowed her to contribute significantly to the genre she loved. Though she passed away in 1914, her contributions as Lawrence L. Lynch continue to be recognized, as her novels have left a lasting legacy in the realm of mystery and crime fiction. Emily Medora Murdock Van Deventer, writing under her pen name, Lawrence L. Lynch, defied conventions and paved the way for future generations of female writers in the genre.
